Field of Dreams

The Path Not Taken, 18 x 24 inches, oil on stretched canvas, ©Ann Painter

I love the North Coast in California. When I was in my thirties, a friend first took me to Mendocino and I have returned almost every year since. The ocean can be wild, the weather ever changing and the coastline rugged and mostly protected from change. For many years I haveI walked the Headlands making art. This past year I took part in the Mendocino Art Center’s Open Paint Out. For a week each year painters come together to paint in this beautiful, unspoiled place. I started this painting during this time and finished in the studio in the months after. The setting is an abandoned field in the small town of Caspar just north of Mendocino. I spent one day of the paint out walking and photographing and searching for a motif that might capture the essence of my experience in this place. This painting reminds me, each time I look at it, of this unspoiled place that I love so much.
